Specific beats exhaustive
Ask three to five strong questions, not a long interview.
The customer should be able to finish while the experience is still easy to recall. Choose prompts that reveal context, a concrete part of the experience and an honest outcome. You can always ask one follow-up if an answer contains an important detail.
A testimonial beside a support feature needs a question about support. A quote near a service CTA needs context about the engagement. Do not collect generic praise and expect it to answer every buyer question.
Four purposes for testimonial questions
Understand the starting point
- What were you trying to accomplish?
- What made the problem difficult before?
- What concern did you have before starting?
Reveal how the work felt
- Which part of the experience stood out?
- What did you value about the process?
- What was easier than you expected?
Name a truthful change
- What changed after using the product or service?
- Which result mattered most to you?
- What can you do now that was harder before?
Help the next buyer self-select
- Who do you think this is most useful for?
- What would you tell someone considering it?
- Is there anyone it may not suit?
Focused question sets by audience
Choose one set and edit the nouns so the customer knows exactly which experience you mean.
SaaS
- What task were you handling before [Product]?
- Which part of onboarding helped you get started?
- Which feature is now part of your normal workflow?
- What feels different in a typical week?
Agencies and freelancers
- What did you need the project to accomplish?
- What did you value about communication or delivery?
- Which part of the finished work is most useful?
- What should a similar client know before starting?
Coaches
- What were you hoping to understand or change?
- Which part of the programme helped you reflect or act?
- What progress are you comfortable describing?
- Who might find this approach useful?
Course creators
- Why did you enrol in the course?
- Which lesson or format helped you keep progressing?
- What can you apply now?
- What would you tell a future student?
Consultants
- What decision or problem prompted the engagement?
- How did the consultant’s process help create clarity?
- Which recommendation or deliverable proved most useful?
- What kind of organisation would benefit from similar work?
Rewrite questions that invite one-word answers.
| Instead of | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Did you like it? | Which part was most useful in your day-to-day work? | Invites a specific example instead of yes or no. |
| How was your experience? | What stood out about the process from start to finish? | Gives the customer a clear frame. |
| Would you recommend us? | Who would you recommend this to, and why? | Adds audience and reasoning. |
| Any comments? | What would you tell someone with the same starting problem? | Connects the answer to another buyer. |
Keep the customer’s meaning intact.
You may shorten repetition or correct an obvious typo, but do not add a benefit, number or certainty the customer did not provide. If edits change the sentence materially, return the final wording for approval.
A structured testimonial form can collect the rating, written response and consent in one place. TestiFollow currently uses one written testimonial field rather than a custom question builder, so include your chosen prompts in the request message.
